Conscious Eating
What To Eat (2)
Humans are unique. There are obvious ways in which that's so but the less than obvious one is this. We are unique in hardly using our sense of smell. We know that "taste" is largely dependent on smell and we know that most animals have well developed receptors that allow them to identify the right foods. Here we are reading books, watching TV programmes and generally flailing around trying to work out what to eat. We can of course get back some of our taste intelligence but how and why should we bother? What To Eat
Another basic truth about food might be: We all make the same mistakes. What I mean to say is most people go round in circles altering their diets and often come back to the same place. So we're different but end up doing the same thing. You gotta break out of it! We have some fundamental rules about what we eat and we derive them from having been on this circus, of having been persuaded to eat badly. What to eat? What Not To Eat
Reawakening Taste Intelligence
Part of the problem of maintaining a good weight is the combination of abundant supplies of succulent, sweet tasting food and our inbuilt compulsion to eat.... succulent sweet foods. One part of a diet strategy, for weight and health, is to rediscover enjoyment in a wider range of tastes.Conscious Eating
The number of diets out there is proliferating. Just lately we've seen The Wine Diet, The 5 Mile Diet, even The Vice Busting Diet. What lies behind all the new books is a change in direction. Not just a change in direction for the dieter but for how writers, scientists, nutritionists and policy advisers think about diet. Why Do We Eat Badly?
Even those of us don't feast at fast food restaurants eat badly, at least from time to time. Indeed there is an argument that says fast food outlets are easy scapegoats for a much more complex set of relationships between food production, food marketing and our attitudes to food. Then of course there is the social aspect of eating. Few people want to be pegged as a fussy eater. One of the biggest problems, too, of course has nothing to do with what we eat - it's what we drink. Whether it's wine, beer, fruit juices or fizzy drinks they're all laden with sugar.
And the sheer difficulty of exercising frequently is up there with the diet as a big contributor to weight problems and elusive well being.
Leave aside exercise and drink for a while though and ask: why do we eat badly, even at times when we know we're doing our bodies no good? One of the answers lies in the nature of food and nutrition research. Much of what we've read in official literature may not be as good for us as we're told.
Empowerment (II)
If you've been following our articles under Our Diet Plan you might be asking, so when are they going to tell me what not to eat? The answer is: soon. But our view is there are plenty of diet books out there already causing enough confusion and contributing to the yo-yo diet effect. Taking a step back from that could be the most effective diet move you're made.
