The Ravi Shankar

The last time I visited London I confess, I even ate a MacDonald's. It's easy to get overwhelmed when visiting the big cities and yes that's a sorry excuse. The sheer effort of trying to locate a decent restaurant made me give up, honest. There is one place I make time to go to if I can and that's a small cafe at the side of one of the main stations.
The Ravi Shankar opened about 25 years ago and its service levels have been known to put people off. Yes the staff can be stand-offish, and some say rude. The decor is not minimalist, it's just bad. The table's are cramped. Maybe it's had the odd face lift or two down the years but to me it looks the same as when I first walked in there as a student. Nonetheless I've been going there (it's right by the side of Euston Station) for all of 25 years and I always enjoy it.

The reason is simple. There are so few Bel Poori houses around. And Bel Poori always strikes me as a healthy snack-type meal.

You don't go to restaurants like this to dine. You go to eat. If you want to eat healthily Bel Poori ticks the boxes. It's made up of puffed rice, a little potato, plenty of coriander, raw onion, a little chili, tamarind and, I think, date juice, and what seem like crispbread made from chickpea flour.

Alternatively you can eat potato, chickpeas and toasted breads.

This is not a culinary voyage but for a different taste and a cheap meal (£5 usually does a couple of snacks dishes) it's worth bearing the staff and their rude ways - actually I find when you talk to them the rudeness seems more of a facade.

The vegetarian dosas (pancakes) are also a treat. Generally made of lentil flour and containing lentils, they do take some digesting.
