Indigestion in de Night

I read somewhere that less than 10% of people suffer indigestion. I read elsewhere that a high proportion of people in Ireland (two thirds) suffer some form of stomach problem every year. They put it down to food poisoning. My hunch is it's severe indigestion. I get it periodically in the middle of the night and it gets me looking close at my diet because the pain can be unbearable and no amount of antacids bring it under control.
The real myth about diets and dieting is we're all concerned about weight when in fact, in my view, we're concerned about very specific health issues.

Acid indigestion is rife and last night I had it. It started around 5.00 am and went on for a couple of hours. It's not like a little acid rising but severe pain in my back - no it's not the heart, I've had this problems for twenty five years.

I take an antacid called fructin which is based on fruit extracts. On normal days it works wonders. Last night it barely damped things down. Every time I swallow I'm in agony. I notice that a lot of wind is trapped down there in my stomach and when that's released the pain decreases.

Maybe I'm describing a hiatus hernia - wouldn't surprise me given what I've eaten in the past. While I'm lying there I go over everything I've eaten. Yesterday a vegetarian Indian at lunch. Cheese and oatcakes for dinner - that's what I blame.

I sat up for a couple of hours and gradually it passed. If anybody has any idea what causes that and any quick ways round it I'd be glad to know. I think acidity is much more of a problem that the figures make out.
